Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent disease ,with significant morbidity and mortality.
The number of non-fatal PE across six European Union countries has been estimated to around 300,000 for a year.
As PE can affect a wide range of patients, many categories of clinicians are concerned by this life-threatening disease.
PE may be suspected in community patients by general practitioner or emergency department's physicians.
PE may also be hospital-acquired after surgery or orthopedic immobilization , or after hospitalization for an acute medical disease like infection , acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Since several decades, PE clinical research is sustained, providing profuse data to promote high evidence-based medicine.
France, with some others Europeans countries, has participated widely in this progress.
Clinical practice guidelines supported by distinguished scientific committees are regularly published, l0eading to about one update every year.
This profusion may also lead to confusion for clinicians,as some guidelines may diverge for example between North-America and Europe.
