AI will deeply alter the practice of medicine and delivery of healthcare. When and how are two noteworthy remaining questions. And in the long run, these tools will almost certainly improve outcomes of clinical care.

They will also inevitably change the processes, and the goals, of clinical training. Education pragmatists acknowledge that the era of AI in education is already upon us and here to stay. With immediate access to tools that can instantaneously review and synthesize the literature, trainees see less value in rote memorization of lists, tables, and charts.

Does this change mean that the physician will be obsolete, or that current trainees are doomed to become expensively-trained AI prompt engineers? No and no. The role of the human in the clinical loop will change, in some exciting and enriching ways. Skills in empathy and interpersonal connection will be prized. The ability to take an avalanche of clinical data and reconcile it with the patient’s clinical reality will be priceless. As educators, we must anticipate these future competencies.
